The Caribbean Sea

The Caribbean Sea is a large oceanic sea located in the basin of the North Atlantic Ocean. It lies between North and South America and stretches across the tropical region of the Western Hemisphere. The sea is often referred to as the American Mediterranean because it borders the coastal areas of many countries, including southern Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras, as well as South American countries such as Venezuela and Colombia.

The Caribbean Sea is one of the largest seas in the world, covering more than 1 million square miles. It is particularly famous for being home to one of the world’s largest barrier reef systems, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, an impressive ecosystem that attracts many divers and nature enthusiasts. The region is also known for its large number of islands and island arcs. Many of them are independent island countries, including Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, while others are territories belonging to different nations. In its western part, the sea is bordered by the southernmost countries of North America.

The Caribbean Sea has a rich and diverse biosphere, which makes it an important area for scientific research and exploration. However, due to unstable climatic conditions, the region is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. Hurricanes frequently affect the area and often threaten coastal settlements around the sea.
