Alabama is one of the hot and humid states in the southeastern United States of America. It is commonly known as the Yellowhammer State and historically as the Cotton State, reflecting its long association with cotton production. Alabama borders Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south, and Mississippi to the west. The state has a small coastal area along the Gulf of Mexico. Alabama’s coastline is just over 60 miles long. The total area of the state is approximately 52,400 square miles, and its average elevation is about 500 feet above sea level. Montgomery is the state capital, while Birmingham is the largest city.

Much of Alabama’s landscape consists of plains and lowlands, particularly in areas closer to the Gulf Coast. A significant portion of the eastern border is defined by the Chattahoochee River, and the state also includes the extensive Mobile River Delta, where the city of Mobile is located. The northeastern part of Alabama features hills and low mountains, with Cheaha Mountain, located in east-central Alabama, marking the state’s highest point. Alabama is known for its natural beauty and protected areas, including Talladega National Forest and Bankhead National Forest. Scenic landscapes can also be found along the Tennessee River in the northern part of the state.
