Iowa is a state in the Midwestern United States, located between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. It is bordered by Minnesota to the north, Wisconsin and Illinois to the east (across the Mississippi River), Missouri to the south, South Dakota to the northwest, and Nebraska to the west (across the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River). Iowa has a total area of about 58,300 square miles, making it the 26th largest state in the United States.

Des Moines is the capital and the largest city in the state. Located in central Iowa, it serves as a major administrative, commercial, transportation, and cultural center. Other large cities in Iowa include Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, Dubuque, Sioux City, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, and Mason City.

Historically, Iowa was part of the French colony of New France before coming under Spanish and later American control, which is why the state flag features colors inspired by the modern French flag.
