Ellis Island is located in Upper New York Bay, New York and New Jersey states, United States. It is situated 1 mile southwest of New York City and 0.5 miles east of Jersey City. It served as an immigration reception center from 1892 to 1954 and was known as the Gateway to the New World. The main building on the island was built in 1900. Owned by the federal government of the United States, the island was named for Samuel Ellis, a merchant from Wales. Today it is open to the public and reached by ferry. Ellis Island has been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since October 15, 1966, as Statue of Liberty National Monument, Ellis Island and Liberty Island. It is also on the list of New Jersey Register of Historic Places and was designated as a New York City Landmark in 1993. Points of interest on the island are the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, Ellis Island Hospital, and Fort Gibson. There is also a cafe on Ellis Island.
