Gauteng, South Africa

Gauteng is a province located in the northeastern part of South Africa and includes major cities such as Johannesburg and Pretoria. Although some areas were small settlements only a few decades ago, rapid urban growth has led to their integration into large metropolitan regions, now known for well-developed infrastructure, schools, and shopping centers. The name Gauteng is believed to come from a local Sotho-Tswana word meaning “the place of gold”, reflecting the region’s historical connection to the South African gold rush, during which the area first began to be widely settled.

Despite being one of the smallest provinces in South Africa, with an area of about 7,000 square miles, Gauteng is the most densely populated province in the country, with a population of well over ten million people. As a result, it has the highest population density nationwide. The province and its residents have experienced a long and complex history shaped by major political, social, and economic events.

Geographically, Gauteng includes heavily urbanized and industrialized areas as well as arable lands used for agriculture and food production. Administratively, the province is divided into three metropolitan municipalities -Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni- and two district municipalities, Sedibeng and West Rand. Key economic sectors in Gauteng include telecommunications, manufacturing, services, and finance, with agriculture playing a more limited role. Overall, the province plays a central role in South Africa’s economy and serves as a major hub for transportation, services, education, logistics, culture, sports, and social life.
