Manhattan is a borough of New York City, located in southeastern New York State, United States. It is the most densely populated of the city’s five boroughs and was first settled by the Dutch in 1624. Manhattan serves as the cultural, economic, financial, historical, and educational center of New York City.

It is home to the United Nations Headquarters, Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and NASDAQ, as well as some of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, including Central Park, Times Square, and Grand Central Terminal.

The borough also hosts many prestigious universities and colleges such as Columbia University, New York University (NYU), Rockefeller University, Cornell Tech, and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Although John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is located in the borough of Queens, it lies approximately 15–20 miles (24–32 km) from Midtown Manhattan.
