Semeru (Gunung Semeru in Indonesian) is an active stratovolcano located to the south of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java province, Indonesia. It is the highest mountain on the island. It is a popular tourist destination and hiking spot with amazing views. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the country. An eruption of Mount Semeru began at 14:50 local time, on 4 December 2021, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 56 people, while 27 people are missing. It damaged thousands of homes and public buildings. Another eruption occurred in January 2021. It erupted a third time on 6 December 2021.
