Springfield, the capital of Illinois and a center of local cultural life, is an old settlement with a rich and interesting history. It was founded on April 10, 1821, and was initially named Calhoun, after U.S. Senator John C. Calhoun, before being renamed Springfield. The community was largely formed by settlers from neighboring states rather than direct immigrants from Europe.

In the 1830s, Abraham Lincoln moved to Springfield, where he lived and developed much of his professional and political career. Today, Springfield is a well-developed and modern city with advanced infrastructure and amenities that support a comfortable and safe quality of life for its residents.

Springfield is home to Lincoln Land Community College, the University of Illinois Springfield, and a campus of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The city is served by Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. Major attractions include the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Illinois State Museum, Washington Park, Washington Park Botanical Garden, Jefferson Park, Dana-Thomas House, Vachel Lindsay Home, White Oaks Mall, Knight’s Action Park, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Springfield is located about 41 miles west of Decatur and 32 miles east of Jacksonville.
