History and Name

The history of Tampa dates back to the early 18th century, when Spanish immigrants established a settlement in search of a better life. The current name of the city was given approximately a century later. The city grew around a small military fort built to protect residents. Today, inhabitants are referred to as “Tampans” or “Tampanians.”

Tampa is located in a popular resort region of the United States, making it a destination for seaside vacations. The city is part of a large metropolitan area that includes St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, and the southernmost city, Sarasota. This metropolitan area is considered among the five largest in the Atlantic region of the U.S.
