West Orange, New Jersey: Birthplace of Thomas Edison

West Orange is a township in New Jersey, United States, located within Essex County and 8 miles northwest of Newark. West Orange is best known as the birthplace of inventor Thomas Edison. It was incorporated as a township on April 10, 1863, and reincorporated as a town on February 28, 1900. It is bordered by Montclair and Orange to the east, Livingston and Roseland to the west, Verona to the north, Essex Fells to the northwest, Maplewood, South Orange, and Millburn to the south. Interstate 280 and Route 10 serve the area.

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN WEST ORANGE
- Essex Green Shopping Center, a 350,000-square-foot shopping mall located at 495 Prospect Avenue. It features many stores, restaurants, and a movie theater, as well as a grocery store, ShopRite of Essex Green.
- Thomas Edison National Historical Park preserves Edison's estate, Glenmont, and his laboratory, which were designed by Henry Hudson Holly and built in 1887. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
- South Mountain Reservation covers an area of 2,047 acres (8.28 km2) and was established in 1895. It is partially located in West Orange.
- Eagle Rock Reservation is located in the Watchung Mountains, in the townships of West Orange, Verona, and Montclair.
