The Black Phone is an American horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. It is based on the short story by Joe Hill from his book 20th Century Ghosts. The film stars Mason Thames, Ethan Hawke, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone. It premiered on September 25, 2021, at Fantastic Fest and was released in the United States on June 24, 2022. The film grossed $161.4 million worldwide against a $16-18 million budget. It was followed by a sequel, The Black Phone 2, released in 2025.
Filming Locations
The Black Phone was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. The Grabber’s house was located at 2415 Shirley Road in Wilmington. Interior scenes were shot at the Wilmington studio of EUE/Screen Gems Studios. The studio has also hosted productions such as The Summer I Turned Pretty, Echoes, and Florida Man.
