Opened on March 29, 2009, to replace Shea Stadium, designed by Populous (now HOK Sport), it has been the home field of New York Mets (MLB) and New York City FC (MLS). The stadium hosted the 2011 World Football Challenge, the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the 2016 National League Wild Card Game, the 2017 Major League Soccer Season, and the 2018 NHL Winter Classic. It was also used as a mass vaccination center during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
