Gothenburg, Sweden

Gothenburg is a city located in the southwestern part of Sweden and is part of the historical provinces of Västergötland and Bohuslän. It is the second-largest city in the country after the capital and is often considered the cultural capital of Sweden, known for its opera house, art museums, monuments, scenic views, cliffs, botanical gardens, shopping malls, and more.

The total area of the city of Gothenburg is about 78 square miles, and its westernmost municipal zones include several islands of the Southern Gothenburg Archipelago. The city was built along the banks of the Göta River, which gave the city its name, and the river’s delta is located about 4-5 miles west of the downtown area. The western outskirts of Gothenburg lie along the shores of the Kattegat, a sea area connected to the North Sea.

Gothenburg is located roughly between the three Scandinavian capitals: about 250 miles southwest of Stockholm, around 190 miles south of Oslo in Norway, and 190 miles north of Copenhagen in Denmark.

The downtown area of Gothenburg is situated in the north-central part of the municipal area, and the central districts include Pustervik, Nordstaden, Gullbergsvass, Prippska Tomten, Stampen, Gårda, Heden, and several others. The largest outer districts of Gothenburg include Masthugget, Landala, Annedal, Lorensberg, Lunden, Kålltorp, Sävenäs, Gamlestaden, Tingstad, and Örgryte. The small satellite area of Johanneberg is located in the southern part of the metropolitan area.
