The name of the town takes origins from the Finnish expression meaning "the place of bonfire" and over 80 per cent of the population is Finnish, with about 13 per cent of the population being Swedish. The town's history starts in the early 17th century when the settlement was established by the local King Gustav. There are a few historical buildings preserved in the modern day's Kokkola. The town's economy is based on industry and producing chemicals, with a few small facilities located in the town. There are a few very good skiing tracks in the neighborhood.
