Massachusetts is one of the eastern states of the United States, located in the region known as New England. The state’s official name is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, the state of New York to the west, and the state of New Hampshire to the north.

The total area of Massachusetts is close to 10,500 square miles, which makes it one of the smaller states in the country. The coastline of Massachusetts is quite long and is estimated to be about 1,500 miles, mainly due to the large number of small and medium-sized islands located along the coast. Geographically, the state is mostly made up of lowlands near the ocean shores, with many bays and inlets found throughout Massachusetts. The state capital, Boston, is located near one of these large inlets formed at the mouth of the Charles River.

The region has played an important role in the country’s history and today remains a key economic and industrial area, contributing a wide range of products and services to the national economy. Worcester, Lowell, Springfield, Cambridge, Quincy, New Bedford, and Brockton are among the largest cities in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is also known for its green landscapes, with several natural parks and protected areas, including Myles Standish State Forest, Cape Cod National Seashore, and Warwick State Forest.
