Ohio is one of the northern states of the United States, bordering Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana. The northern part of the state lies along Lake Erie, directly across from the Canadian shores. Ohio has a total area of approximately 44,825 square miles, and its territory includes several small islands in Lake Erie.

Columbus is the capital and largest city of the state. Other major metropolitan areas include Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo. Cleveland is located in the northeastern corner of the state, while Cincinnati is in the southwestern part. Columbus is situated in the central part of the state, approximately halfway between these two large cities.

The name of the state comes from the Ohio River, one of the largest rivers in the United States, which forms part of the southern border of the state. Geographically, Ohio is divided into two major regions: the Appalachian Plateau (which includes the Allegheny Plateau and the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau) and the Central Lowlands (including the Till Plains and the Lake Erie Plains). Most of the hills and forests are in the eastern and southeastern parts of the state, but much of Ohio consists of lowlands and gently rolling terrain.

Grand Lake St. Marys is the largest lake in the state. Major green areas include Vinton Furnace State Forest, Wayne National Forest, Tar Hollow State Forest, and Pike Lake State Park.
