Michigan is one of the northern states of the United States of America, bordering Canada to the north and northeast, and the states of Ohio and Indiana to the south. To the west, Michigan borders the state of Wisconsin. With a total area of about 96,700 square miles, it is the 11th largest state in the country. Michigan is located in the very heart of the Great Lakes region and has a unique geography. The state lies on two peninsulas, which are separated from each other by Lake Michigan and the Straits of Mackinac.

The state has actual borders with four of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron. Michigan is known for its countless small lakes, many of which can be found in the southern part of the state. The city of Lansing, situated near the central part of the state, is the capital of Michigan, but the city of Detroit, located in the southeastern part of the state near the shores of Lake St. Clair, is the largest city. Other major cities include Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Flint, Battle Creek, and several others.

The state is famous for its numerous natural landmarks, especially national forests and picturesque woodland areas, which are found mainly in the northern regions of Michigan. These include the Huron-Manistee National Forests, Atlanta State Forest Area, Gaylord State Forest Area, Sault Ste. Marie State Forest Area, Newberry State Forest Area, Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Hiawatha National Forest, Gwinn State Forest Area, Baraga State Forest Area, and various others.
