Virginia, USA

Virginia is one of the eastern states of the United States of America and is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country. It faces the Atlantic Ocean along its eastern coastline and shares borders with Delaware, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland. Virginia has a total area of about 42,775 square miles, making it one of the smaller states by land area. The state includes many small islands situated near its coastal areas. Virginia’s coastline is notably long- approximately 3,300 miles- due to the numerous islands, peninsulas, and bays that define its shoreline.

Richmond is the capital city of Virginia. Other major cities include Chesapeake, Norfolk, Newport News, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Lynchburg, Alexandria, and several others. Geographically, Virginia has two distinctly different regions. The eastern and southeastern areas consist of lowlands, while the western and northern parts rise significantly and include the Blue Ridge Mountains. A large number of rivers flow from the higher western regions toward the east. These include the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James Rivers, among others.

Virginia is known as “the Mother of Presidents,” as it is the home state of several U.S. Presidents. The state enjoys a beautiful geographical setting and has a distinctive local culture. It is considered an important center within the Atlantic region of the United States.
