Alamogordo, New Mexico: Home to the World's Largest Pistachio

Alamogordo is a city in New Mexico, United States, located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 54 and 82. U.S. Route 70 also passes through the city. Alamogordo serves as the seat of Otero County. It was founded in 1898 and incorporated in 1912. The city is situated in the Tularosa Basin within the Chihuahuan Desert. The Sacramento Mountains form its eastern border. Alamogordo is most known for its proximity to the site of the first atomic bomb test, the Trinity explosion, conducted on July 16, 1945, at what was then the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, later renamed the White Sands Proving Ground and now known as the White Sands Missile Range. Holloman Air Force Base, established in 1942, is located 6 miles southwest of Alamogordo.

The city hosts various events and festivals, including the Cottonwood Arts and Crafts Festival, the Tommy Padilla Memorial Basketball Tournament, and the White Sands Balloon Invitational. Local attractions include the New Mexico Museum of Space History, the Tularosa Basin Museum of History, the Shroud Exhibit and Museum, the American Armed Forces Museum, the Toy Train Depot, Desert Foothills Park, Aviator 10 - Allen Theatres, and the World's Largest Pistachio. Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport serves the area.
