One of the largest cities in eastern Alabama, Auburn is situated within Lee County. It was founded in 1836 and incorporated on February 2, 1839. It is served by Interstate 85, U.S. Routes 29 and 280, and Auburn University Regional Airport. The city is part of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. The city is known as an educational hub, home to Auburn University, one of the largest and oldest in the state. It is a public research university established in 1856.
