Beaufort is a large town in North Carolina, United States, located within Carteret County near Beaufort Inlet. It serves as the county seat. The town was incorporated in 1723, making it one of the oldest in North Carolina. It was named after Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort. There are several historic buildings and sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Carteret County Home, Jacob Henry House, and the Beaufort Historic District. The town is home to the Duke University Marine Laboratory. It is served by U.S. Route 70, North Carolina Highway 101, Island Express Ferry Service, and Michael J. Smith Field.
