The town is home to Appalachian State University and Watauga Campus - Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. It is served by U.S. Routes 221, 321, and 421. The town was incorporated in 1872 and named after American pioneer Daniel Boone. Boone is famous for the athletic team of Appalachian State University, the Mountaineers. It has many points of interest, such as Elk Knob State Park, Boone Mall, Daniel Boone Native Gardens, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Kidd Brewer Stadium, Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park, Children's Playhouse, and Howard Knob County Park.
