Gunnison is a city located east of Blue Mesa Reservoir, in the Rocky Mountains, central Colorado, United States. It is the seat of Gunnison County. The city was incorporated on March 1, 1880 and named after John W. Gunnison, who was an explorer and American military officer. It has a total area of 4.849 sq mi (12.558 km2). It is also the most populous municipality in the county. U.S. Highway 50 and The Gunnison–Crested Butte Regional Airport serve the city. The city is home to Western Colorado University.
