Serving as the seat of Lafayette County, Oxford is a city in northern Mississippi, United States, located on U.S. Highway 278, near Sardis Lake. It was named after the city in England, founded in the middle of the 19th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Chickasaw people. The city is situated in the central part of the county, and 85 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The University of Mississippi, a public research university established in 1844, is located near Oxford. It is the oldest and largest university in Mississippi. It is home to Vaught Hemingway Stadium. The university is surrounded by the city of Oxford.

There are several tourist attractions in Oxford, including the Lafayette County Courthouse, Square Books, the Lyric Theater, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Lyceum–The Circle Historic District, and the University of Mississippi Museum. Rowan Oak, the home of Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner is also in Oxford. It was built in 1844 in the Greek Revival style and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a National Historic Landmark and a Mississippi Landmark. The city is home to Fat Possum Records, an independent record label, founded in 1992.
