Mankato, nicknamed Key City, is a city in Minnesota, United States. The city is located within three counties: Le Sueur, Blue Earth, and Nicollet. Serving as the seat of Blue Earth County, the city was founded in 1852 and incorporated on March 6, 1868. Mankato Regional Airport is situated about 5 miles northeast of the city center. It is also served by U.S. Routes 14 and 169 and Minnesota State Highways 22, 60, and 83. Mankato is home to Minnesota State University, one of the largest universities in the state. It is a public university that was founded in 1868. Notable alumni include the 41st governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, academic and suffragist Julia Sears, professional ice hockey forward David Backes, and Indian mountaineer Malavath Purna.
