The city of Holyoke is located on the banks of the Connecticut River in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. Situated 8 miles north of Springfield, the city is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Area. It is home to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame (IVHF), which was founded in 1978. Holyoke is known as the "Birthplace of Volleyball" where volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. It is also home to Holyoke Community College. The city has two other nicknames: "The Paper City" and "The Venice of America". Holyoke was settled in 1655, incorporated as a city on April 7, 1873, and named for Elizur Holyoke. It is bordered by West Springfield to the south, Easthampton to the north, Chicopee, Hadley, and South Hadley to the east, and Southampton and Westfield to the west.
