Independence is a city and the seat of Montgomery County in Southeastern Kansas, United States, located on the Verdigris River at the intersection of U.S. Route 75 and U.S. Route 160. It was named after the United States Declaration of Independence and incorporated in 1870. The area was originally inhabited by the Osage Indians.

With over 100 years of history, the Independence Public Library has remained in the same location at 220 East Maple Street. Independence Municipal Airport serves the area. The city can also be reached by bus or train. Independence Community College, a public community college, is situated in Independence. The city is known for its annual event Neewolah Festival. Other local attractions include Elk City State Park, Central Park Sports Complex, and Robert Wesley Park.
