Louisville is a major city in the state of Kentucky, located in the east-central region of the United States. The city sits in the northern part of Kentucky on the eastern bank of the Ohio River, with the opposite bank belonging to the state of Indiana. Louisville is part of the Bluegrass region, specifically the area known as the Outer Bluegrass Region.

A number of large North American cities lie within several hundred miles of Louisville. Nashville is about 176 miles to the southwest, St. Louis is roughly 260 miles to the west, and Cincinnati is around 100 miles to the northeast. Columbus is located a little over 200 miles to the northeast, while Indianapolis and Chicago are positioned approximately 155 miles and 300 miles to the north, respectively.

Louisville is surrounded by many small and mid-sized towns, including West Point, Brooks, Shepherdsville, Mount Washington, Taylorsville, Wilsonville, Finchville, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Pewee Valley, Crestwood, Buckner, River Bluff, and others. The city spans nearly 400 square miles, and its metropolitan area includes a number of former small towns such as Prairie Village, Medora, Fishtown, Orell, Penile, Parkwood, Knopp, Heritage Creek, Spring Mill, Hollow Creek, Ashville, Thixton, Seatonville, Hopewell, Boston, Middletown, Anchorage, Coldstream, Fincastle, Creekside, Ten Broeck, Green Spring, Glenview, and several more.

Louisville’s central districts are located in the northwestern portion of the city’s overall area. The central zone includes neighborhoods such as Shively, Audubon Park, Parkway Village, Seneca Gardens, St. Matthews, Rolling Fields, the Highlands, Crescent Hill, and others.
