Nebraska City: Nebraska’s Oldest Incorporated City

Nebraska City, also known as "The Home of Arbor Day", is located on the Missouri River on the state border with Iowa. It serves as the seat of Otoe County. Known as the oldest incorporated city in Nebraska, it was first explored by European-Americans in 1804 during the Lewis and Clark expedition along the Missouri River. The city is known for Arbor Day, which was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City. Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum, located at 2600 Arbor Avenue, is a major tourist attraction in the city. Founded in 1923, the park has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1969. It is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Nebraska City is home to the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired, established in 1875. Located at 100 Valmont Drive, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Trails and Visitor Center overlooks the Missouri River and is surrounded by hiking trails. U.S. Route 75 provides direct access to nearby towns and cities from Nebraska City.
