Niles, Ohio: Birthplace of William McKinley

Niles is a city in Ohio, United States, within Trumbull County. It is located on the Mahoning River, about 62 miles southeast of Cleveland. Originally known as Heaton's Furnace, the city was founded by James Heaton at the beginning of the 19th century.

Niles is bordered by Mineral Ridge to the south, Hilltop and McDonald to the southeast, Bolindale to the northwest, and McKinley Heights to the east.

Niles is the birthplace of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, who served from March 4, 1897, to September 14, 1901. The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial, located at 40 N. Main Street (latitude 41.180833, longitude -80.766111), is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Built between 1915 and 1917 in the Beaux-Arts style, the memorial houses the McKinley Memorial Library and the McKinley Memorial Museum. The McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center is also situated nearby.

U.S. Route 422 passes through the city, while State Routes 46 and 169 also serve the area.

Eastwood Mall is one of the top employers in Niles. Located at 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road (latitude 41.214444, longitude -80.749444), this indoor shopping center features more than 100 stores and services. Opened in 1969, it has a total floor area of 1,600,000 sq ft (150,000 m²). Its anchor stores include Macy’s, JCPenney, and Target.
