A many-centuries-old symbol of the royal power of the United Kingdom, the Tower of London is a historic castle also known as the Royal Palace and Fortress. It is the oldest building of the fortification complex built by William the Conqueror at the end of the 11th century, and the Tower of London played a key role in the whole history of the country. The landmark is located in the central part of London, on the northern bank of the River Thames.

The total area of the historical complex is estimated to be close to 12 acres, and the Tower of London is among the most important historical landmarks included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. The complex includes a number of buildings and areas such as the White Tower, the Inner Ward, the Outer Ward, several additional towers, various gates, and other sections.

The complex historically served as a fortification and a defensive facility protecting the capital city against invasions. It also functioned as a royal residence for members of the Royal Family, as well as a prison, including during conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
