Baghdad is the capital city and a key cultural, educational, commercial, business, and economic center of the Republic of Iraq. Geographically the city is located almost in the center of the country, in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula, and it forms of the largest metropolitan zone of the Middle Eastern region of the Asian continent. Baghdad is located on both western and eastern banks of the river of Tigris and has the total area of almost 79 square miles which makes the city the largest in the whole region of southwestern Asia. The central part of Baghdad is located about 80 miles west of the border between Iraq and Iran. The city of Basrah can be found about 325 miles south east of the capital city, and the city of Erbil is located about 225 sheer north of Baghdad.

Administratively, the city is divided into 9 large districts which are, in turn, divided into many smaller municipal sub-districts. The center of the city is located in the geographical center of the municipal area and it includes the sub-districts of Mansour, Drage, Daoudi, Yarmouk, Kindi, Kharthiya, and a few others. Overall, the districts of Baghdad are classified as the eastern and the western ones, taking reference from their location on the banks of the Tigris River. The eastern districts include Baghdad Al-Jadida (or New Baghdad), Rusafa District, Safr City, Adhamiyah District, and the district of Karradah. The districts that are located to the west of the Tigris River include Mansour District, Al Rashid District, the district of Kadhimiya, and the district of Karkh. The close neighborhoods of Baghdad include the towns of Hosseinia, Taji, Abu Ghraib, Mahmudiyah, Al Wihda, and so on.
