It serves as the county seat and is the main city of the Bellefontaine Micropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was founded in 1817, taking its name from the French word meaning “beautiful spring”. The city is home to several educational institutions, such as campuses of Clark State Community College and Ohio State University.
