Bhopal is a large city and the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, a state situated in the central region of India. The city is located approximately in the center of the state, about 110 miles east of the city of Indore and about 170 miles west of the city of Jabalpur. Those are the largest cities of Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal is also the capital of the same name division and the same name district. The area of the city is close to 110 square miles which makes Bhopal among the country's top 20 largest cities. The city is situated in the lowlands near the Vindhya Mountain range, on the Malwa plateau. Bhopal is known as the City of Lakes since there are plenty of medium and small lakes can be found in the area, with Upper Lake being one of the largest lakes in the neighborhood.
