Chauri Chaura is a small town in the neighborhood of Gorakhpur city in the eastern Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. The town was established in the beginning of the last century, near a large national highway, about 31 kilometers from Gorakhpur. The town is notorious for an incident that took place in British India on 4 February 1922, which resulted in the death of three civilians and 23 policemen.
