The seat of Cecil County, Elkton is a small town in northeastern Maryland, United States. It is located on the Big Elk Creek, to the west of the Delaware River, to the northeast of Elk Neck State Forest, and about 50 miles southwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town's nickname is "The Elopement capital of the East Coast". It was settled by the Swedish in 1694, incorporated in 1787, and has a total area of 9.16 sq mi (23.73 km2). The town was formerly known as Head of Elk. Local attractions include Holly Hall, Meadow Park, The Historical Society of Cecil County, Hollingsworth House-Fort Hollingsworth Historic Site, Cow Pond Recreation Area, Brantwood Regional Park, and Patriots Glen National Golf Club. U.S. Route 40 serves the area.
