Gorakhpur (गोरखपुर) is a large city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, located in a large valley near the Rapti River, eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded about 1400 and took its name after a Hindu saint. Situated 40 miles south of the Nepal border, Gorakhpur is the capital of the same name district. The city is also a commercial and industrial hub, and a center of religion, with a very diverse community and plenty of religious establishments like Hindu temples, mosques, churches, etc. There are a few military stations and air bases in the city too. Tourists are attracted by local unique cuisine and interesting local fine arts.
