Harrisonburg, Virginia: Home of James Madison University

Harrisonburg is a city in Virginia, United States, located in the Shenandoah Valley. The city lies along major highways such as Interstate 81 and U.S. Routes 11 and 33. Founded in 1779 and incorporated in 1916, Harrisonburg was named after its founder, Thomas Harrison. It is best known as the home of James Madison University, a public research university established in 1908. Commonly known as The Friendly City, H’burg, Rocktown, or The Burg, Harrisonburg also serves as the county seat of Rockingham County.

The city has a remarkable location near large and scenic natural areas, including Shenandoah National Park and Shenandoah River State Park. It is located approximately 128 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. Harrisonburg is a green city with numerous parks, hiking trails, and many well-preserved historic buildings.

One of the city’s notable attractions is the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum (38.4289897, -78.8631119), located on the James Madison University campus at 780 University Blvd. The arboretum features peaceful walking paths and forested areas and is easily accessible via Interstate 81.

Another significant historic landmark is the Rockingham County Courthouse, located at Courthouse Square (38.4495928, -78.8695395). Built in the late 19th century and designed by T.J. Collins, the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 16, 1982.
