John Day is a small city in Grant County, Oregon, located north of Canyon City. Incorporated in the early 20th century, the city was once an important mining center. Today, its economy mainly relies on agriculture and small businesses.
John Day is situated in the valley of the John Day River in eastern Oregon. The area is surrounded by hills, forests, and nearby mountain ranges such as the Blue Mountains and the Strawberry Mountains. Malheur National Forest, one of the region’s main tourist attractions, is located about 35 miles south of the city. John Day is also home to the forest’s headquarters at 431 Patterson Bridge Road.
The city offers several accommodation options and recreational facilities, including the John Day Golf Club. Visitors can also explore the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site, a state park known for preserving local Chinese-American history. The historic Kam Wah Chung Company Building dates back to 1866 and was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on September 20, 2005.
Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum is one of the city’s most unique attractions. The museum preserves artifacts, furniture, and historical documents related to the Chinese community that once lived in eastern Oregon.
U.S. Route 26 and U.S. Route 395 pass through the city, which is also served by Grant County Regional Airport.
