Lincoln is one of the largest cities in Nebraska, a state located in the central part of the United States. It serves as the state capital and as the seat of a small county. The city is situated in the eastern part of the state and functions as a transportation hub, built along Interstate 80. U.S. Route 34 also passes through the area. Together with several smaller nearby cities, Lincoln forms a large urban region known as the Lincoln–Beatrice Combined Statistical Area. Covering a total area of about 100 square miles, the city is the center of a sizable urban territory. Lincoln is located approximately 200 miles northwest of Kansas City, 480 miles east of Denver, and 520 miles southwest of Chicago.

Lincoln first appeared on the map as a small village in the mid-19th century, and today it has grown into a major cultural and business center for the region. The city offers many attractions, including the Nebraska State Capitol, Hyde Observatory, Historic Haymarket, Joshua C. Turner Arboretum, Memorial Stadium, the Museum of American Speed, Gateway Mall, the National Museum of Roller Skating, Bob Devaney Sports Center, Oak Lake Park, Haymarket Park, Star City Shores, and Sun Valley Lanes & Games. Lincoln is also home to several higher education institutions, most notably the University of Nebraska.
