Tucson is one of the largest cities in Arizona, located in a desert valley in the southern part of the state, not far from the Mexican border. The city lies at an elevation of about 2,650 feet above sea level. Tucson developed along the Santa Cruz River, which is dry for most of the year but carries water seasonally, especially after rainfall.

The distance from Tucson to the Mexican border is approximately 60 miles. Phoenix, the state capital, is located about 115 miles northwest of the city, while El Paso, Texas, lies roughly 300 miles to the east.

Tucson is known for its vibrant cultural life, offering numerous book fairs, concerts, exhibitions, and other events. It also features many natural attractions, including botanical gardens, desert landscapes, and nearby national parks. The Tucson metropolitan area covers around 220 square miles, with the downtown district situated in the northwestern portion of the metro region.

Central Tucson includes historic and well-known neighborhoods such as El Presidio, Downtown, Barrio Libre, Barrio Viejo, Historic Fourth Avenue, and Iron Horse. Major suburban and surrounding areas include South Tucson, Las Vistas, Drexel-Alvernon, Rita Ranch, Catalina Foothills, Casas Adobes, and Drexel Heights.

The city is home to the main campus of the University of Arizona. Tucson is also surrounded by significant protected natural areas, including Saguaro National Park (East and West), Tucson Mountain Park, and the Santa Catalina Natural Area.
