It is situated 16 miles south of Hartford, the capital of the state. The city is bordered by the towns of Cromwell, East Hampton, Portland, Haddam, Middlefield, Durham, Meriden, and Berlin. The city was originally known as Mattabeseck, incorporated as a town in 1651, and as a city in 1784. Middletown is home to the headquarters of the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. Artists For World Peace and Wesleyan University are also based in the city.
