Oberlin, Ohio

Oberlin is a city in Ohio, United States, located within Lorain County, 34 miles southwest of Cleveland and 60 miles northwest of Akron. State Routes 58 and 511, as well as U.S. Route 20, pass through the city, providing easy access to nearby towns and cities. The city is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. It was founded by John Jay Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart in 1833 and named after philanthropist J. F. Oberlin. The Anti-Saloon League, also known as the American Council on Addiction and Alcohol Problems, was founded in 1893 in Oberlin, Ohio. 

Oberlin College: History and Significance 

The city is home to Oberlin College, formerly known as Oberlin Collegiate Institute. Situated at 173 West Lorain Street (latitude 41.2958638, longitude -82.2211286), it is a private liberal arts college established on December 3, 1833. Oberlin College is recognized as the nation’s oldest coeducational liberal arts college. 

Oberlin Conservatory of Music 

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, located at 77 West College Street (latitude 41.291389, longitude -82.219444), was founded in 1865, making it the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory. 

Oberlin High School and Notable Alumni 

Oberlin High School is a historic school located at 281 North Pleasant Street. Founded in 1833, its notable alumni include scientist Ross Gunn, inventor of the Hall-Héroult process Charles Martin Hall, and professional football players Dwight Peabody and Jason Moore.
