Old Dominion University is a public research university located in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, at 5115 Hampton Boulevard, between the Elizabeth River and the Lafayette River. Established on March 13, 1930, the university takes its name from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s state nickname. The campus is situated near Lamberts Point, approximately three miles north of downtown Norfolk and ten miles west of Norfolk International Airport.
The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs through its academic units, including the College of Sciences, the Ellmer College of Health Sciences, the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and the Strome College of Business. Spanning approximately 250 acres, the campus includes numerous facilities, amenities, and points of interest for students.
Old Dominion University is home to S.B. Ballard Stadium, where the NCAA Old Dominion Monarchs compete. The stadium previously hosted the Monarchs Field Hockey team from 1974 to 2007. In addition, the Lady Monarchs basketball team, one of the university’s most successful athletic programs, has won three national championships. Notable alumni include professional football quarterback Taylor Heinicke, professional basketball player Kent Bazemore, former astronaut Michael Bloomfield, journalist Jay Harris, and politician Winsome Sears.
