One of the largest cities in Nebraska, Omaha is located in the easternmost part of the state, right on the border between Nebraska and Iowa. The city is situated on the left bank of the Missouri River, in the central part of the North American continent. Omaha is part of the region known as the Midwestern United States, and it has an area of about 140 square miles, spreading between the Platte and Missouri rivers.

The downtown area of Omaha is located in the easternmost part of the municipal area, on the western bank of the Missouri River, overlooking the lands of Iowa and the city of Council Bluffs. Omaha is located about 55 miles northeast of the state capital, Lincoln, 180 miles northwest of Kansas City, 290 miles southwest of Minneapolis, and 465 miles west of the city of Chicago.
