Saint Cloud, a city in Stearns, Benton, Sherburne Counties, Minnesota, United States, is located on the Mississippi River and 66 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Interstate 94 passes through the city. Other major routes that run through the city are U.S. Highway 10, and Minnesota State Highways 15 and 23. Known as The Granite City, Saint Cloud was founded in 1856 and named after a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, France. The city serves as the seat of Stearns County.
The city is home to St. Cloud State University, a large public university founded in 1869. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs in seven colleges and schools. The university is among the top employers in the city. It is also home to St. Cloud Technical and Community College. Saint Cloud has a hydroelectric dam located on the Mississippi River. St. Cloud Hospital, the top employer in the city, is located at 1406 6th Ave N. The hospital was opened in 1886 as St. Benedict's, and renamed in 1928.
There are many points of interest in Saint Cloud, such as Lake George/Eastman Park, Munsinger Gardens, Paramount Center for the Arts, Lake George Municipal Complex, the Cathedral of Saint Mary, the St. Cloud Commercial Historic District, Stearns History Museum, and Midtown Square Mall. St. Cloud Regional Airport is situated about 6 miles east of the city center. Minnesota Correctional Facility – St. Cloud is a state prison established in 1889. Minnesota State Reformatory for Men Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986.
