Salem is a city in New Jersey, United States, located on the Salem River near the state border with Delaware. It serves as the seat of Salem County. It was founded by John Fenwick in the 17th century, incorporated as a township on February 21, 1798, and as a city on February 25, 1858. The Old Salem County Courthouse, built in 1735, is located in the city. Situated at the corner of Broadway Street and Market Street, it is one of the oldest active courthouses in the United States. The Market Street Historic District was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1975 and on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places on December 9, 1974. It includes 44 contributing buildings, including the historic courthouse. Local attractions also include the Salem County Historical Society.

The city is bordered by Elsinboro to the southwest, Lower Alloways Creek to the south, Mannington Township to the northeast, Pennsville to the northwest, and Quinton to the southeast. Salem is served by Routes 45 and 49. The Port of Salem on the Salem River handles a diverse range of bulk shipments, including construction aggregates, break-bulk goods, and containerized cargo.
