The village of Watkins Glen is located on the southern tip of Seneca Lake, in New York, United States. It is the seat of Schuyler County. The village is best known for its role in auto racing. It is about 8 minutes away from Watkins Glen International "The Glen", which was home to the Formula One United States Grand Prix. It has been also home to the NASCAR Cup Series, World Sportscar Championship, Trans-Am, Can-Am, the International Motor Sports Association, WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the IndyCar Series. The village was settled in 1791. It took its current name in 1852 after Dr. Samuel Watkins. Tourist attractions in and around the village include Watkins Glen State Park, the Watkins Glen Public Library, Rainbow Falls, International Motor Racing Research Center, and so on. The village is also home to Farm Sanctuary which is an American animal protection organization. It was founded in 1986 by Gene Baur and Lorri Houston, became the first shelter for farmed animals in the United States. It provides lifelong care for thousands of rescue animals and welcomes visitors from all around the world.
