Starring Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, Maria Michi, Giovanna Galletti, Jean-Pierre Léaud, and Massimo Girotti, the film premiered on 14 October 1972 at the New York Film Festival and was released on 16 December 1972 in Italy. It grossed $96 million worldwide against a $1 million budget and became one of the highest-grossing films of 1973. It also received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director.
The film follows Paul, a middle-aged American businessman mourning his wife's death, who meets a young Parisian woman named Jeanne.
