Athens is a city in Georgia, United States, located in the northeastern part of the state. The city is about 72 miles northeast of Atlanta. It is served by several major highways, including U.S. Routes 129, 441, and 78. Athens-Ben Epps Airport also serves the area. The city is known for being home to the University of Georgia, established on January 27, 1785. It is the nation’s first state-chartered public university and is the main pillar of the city’s life, economy, culture, sports, and other aspects. Athens is also home to Athens Technical College, Piedmont University, and other educational institutions. 

The main attractions of the city include parks, museums, and plenty of venues for musical and cultural events. Athens becomes very crowded in summer when it is time for a number of musical festivals and concerts like AthFest.

Athens, Georgia, has an impressive musical heritage. The famous American rock band R.E.M. was formed there in 1980, and the city has given rise to many other influential groups, including Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic, Futurebirds, and Flat Duo Jets.

• Dudley Park is a beautiful park spanning 24 acres, located at the confluence of the North Oconee River and Trail Creek (33.9573405, -83.3654923). It features hiking trails and picnic areas, which make it a great spot for relaxation near the heart of the city.
• Sanford Stadium is a football stadium at 100 Sanford Drive (33.949724, -83.3735755) in the University of Georgia. It has a capacity of 92,000 seats, making it one of the nation’s top ten largest American football stadiums. It was opened on October 12, 1929, and has been home to the Georgia Bulldogs (NCAA) since then. Sanford Stadium also hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics.
• The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is one of the major points of interest in Athens, located on the bank of the Middle Oconee River at 2450 South Milledge Avenue (33.9023543, -83.3847541). It covers an area of 313 acres and features walking paths and educational programs.
• The Georgia Museum of Art, founded in 1948, is located on the campus of the University of Georgia (33.941114, -83.3700658). The museum’s collection includes works by William Merritt Chase, Frank Weston Benson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Theodore Robinson, John Singer Sargent, and Childe Hassam.
• The Georgia Museum of Natural History is located near the Georgia Museum of Art at (33.9449839, -83.3718538). It showcases archaeological, geological, biological, and paleontological exhibits.
